We began our partnership with Teenage Cancer Trust in 2012 back when we were known as City Plumbing Supplies. Since then P&H have raised £2.4 million for this incredible charity and this money has helped them to continue giving the life-changing support so many young people rely on. Here’s why we chose to work with Teenage Cancer Trust:

Why Teenage Cancer Trust’s work is so important

Each day in the UK, seven people aged 13-24 will be diagnosed with cancer. The dedicated team at Teenage Cancer Trust – both staff and volunteers - create a community where young people can come together and battle cancer as one. Hearing that you have a life-changing illness is not easy news to take and the charity understands it can be especially difficult for teenagers and young adults.

What they do to help young people

A large part of what Teenage Cancer Trust does is provide support to these young people and help them live a normal life throughout their treatment. Their Youth Support Coordinators bring them together for events like Find Your Sense of Tumour – which shows young cancer sufferers that they can still have fun.

The Trust also employs many specialist nurses who work in the 28 Teenage Cancer Trust units across the UK. The staff at these cancer units provide a life-changing service and make sure that no young person is going through battle alone. And because they aim to reach every young person around the UK, no matter where they live or if they’re being treated on a unit, they need our continued help.

What their help means to young people

Toby was diagnosed with Leukaemia at age 15 and though he had a challenging battle he decided the disease would not stop him from getting out there and living his life. In 2016, Teenage Cancer Trust asked him to join the committee for their Find Your Sense of Tumour conference. Toby saw this as a chance to use his experience of fighting cancer to make this event even better.

The conference went so well and Toby’s speech was such a success that Plumbing and Heating - then City Plumbing Supplies - asked him to give a speech at our annual charity ball. This was a great reminder of why we’ve kept this partnership going strong these last eight years.

How we raised £2.4 million for Teenage Cancer Trust

We have both our colleagues and customers to thank for reaching this astounding milestone. In 2015, we made the decision that we would hit £1 million raised for Teenage Cancer Trust by the end of that year, so to have doubled that figure really feels like a huge achievement. Over the years, we’ve hosted countless charity events, from running marathons and climbing mountains to golf days and gala dinners. But our most notable event was the ‘Have you Cake and Eat It’ bake sale which raised £8,500 in one day alone.

It’s not just the generosity of our colleagues and customers that makes us proud, but also the sheer enthusiasm everyone has shown. And to put into perspective what this money means to the charity, £2.4 million is enough to maintain all the Teenage Cancer Trust specialist units across the country for over two years.

How we’re helping throughout Covid-19

This month we launched our Comb Together initiative where we’re encouraging our colleagues and customers to swap their home improvement for hair improvement. During the lockdown, most of us have experimented with home hairstyling or have at least toyed with the idea whilst salons and barbers are closed for business. We’re asking that the money normally spent on a fresh trim be donated to Teenage Cancer Trust so that it can help buy wigs and support the young people living with cancer.

Here are a few words from our Deputy CEO, Andrew Harrison:

The relevance of Teenage Cancer Trust to both P&H staff and customers alike is huge and I’m so proud of everyone who has been involved over the last 7 years, pushing us to this extraordinary total of £2.4 million. Having so many wonderful colleagues jumping out of planes, breaking out of jail, climbing mountains, cycling for days (and nights), hosting regional balls, running marathons, wading through mud and much more, it's somehow in our DNA! Working for this great cause which supports young people with cancer is a privilege and I am personally delighted with the partnership.
