Meet Katherine - Publications Manager

Katherine first started with the division back in May 2018 but has recently returned from a 6 month break used to look after her young family.  



Katherine is the Publications Marketing Manager at P&H and her team look after the development of all the printed publications that are dispatched to our Branches and Showrooms across the City Plumbing network. This includes our Monthly Deals, the Mega Deals, The Bathroom Showroom brochures as well as all sales collateral, including the priced POS for the Showrooms. 

We caught up with Katherine to ask her about her role...

So, what does the average day look like? 


I am currently working 3 days a week (returning to 4 in April), so the first priority of the day is to make sure I am up to speed with the latest developments in our current projects. This could range from checking the latest proofs of a Monthly Deals leaflet, to reviewing the concepts of a new version ofThe Bathroom Showroom Brochure (due to launch in May).  Behind the scenes an awful lot of work goes into selecting products for each sale (or deal) period so there are frequent meetings on bringing the information together and refining it.. We don't like to sit on our laurels either. After each publication is issued, we get together as a wider team to review how projects have gone, and what we could do better for next time. We do this by talking to our colleagues and hiring third parties to carry out insights work in the wider market place. We use this information to review our messaging and refine as appropriate. Q2 2020 will bring a new Showroom Brochure and Technical Guide, new Showroom POS, production for the Tile Brochure, Electrical Guide and September's TPG, as well as the May/June and July/August deals, and the TBS Summer sale.


And how do you manage to juggle all of this as well as being a mum?


The company gives me the flexibility I need to be a mum and be effective at work.  Being a mother to 2 pre-school children and wishing to pursue a career within the division is personally challenging but I cannot fault the support I have received from my boss, team and wider colleagues!      

Working part time in a Management role means I have to be super organised, and I plan ahead as much as possible. I also firmly believe that if you want a career and a company is flexible with you and your needs, then you need to be flexible with them. It’s give and take! For me this has meant clearing down emails on a weekend if I know a week in the office is going to be particularly hectic, or turning the laptop on at home after the children's bedtime to make sure we hit deadlines. 


What do you like about your role ? 


I like the variation in my role and that we get ownership of what we are delivering to the business. Also no two weeks are the same. As a division we are constantly moving forward in what we do, and always trying to do it better. This means I find I am learning every week, which is exciting. 


What would you say to someone who is thinking of moving into Marketing?


So I love our team and what we are doing. However there is always a deadline, and even when that hits there is the constant communications and work on improving what we have done ready for next time.   

However, it is fun, never dull and there is a genuine pride in the office when we land something well. The Marketing team also offers wide and varied roles, so finding something that you enjoy, whether it is producing Publications, organising events, assisting with local marketing for Branches or helping drive loyalty from our customers, is likely. 

If you're interested in getting into Marketing, but worried about lack of experience or knowledge, then don't worry. Whilst this is advantageous for some roles, I have always seen attitude and work ethic as just as important. When I've hired new team members one of my main thoughts is "are they going to be hungry for my job?" and if the answer is "yes" then I see it as a positive. Apply today!
