Katy began her career with Plumbing and Heating in 2007 and her journey with us is nothing short of impressive. During this time, she has progressed from a sales assistant role up to branch manager and has been instrumental in helping us open several new branches along the way.
It’s stories like Katy’s that we love to share because she’s just one example of the many colleagues at P&H who have a great, can-do attitude and use this to build a fantastic career for themselves. A positive mindset and willingness to learn new skills are more important to us than experience, and with these traits, you’ll go far at P&H. If you’re interested in what it’s like to be a branch manager at P&H, you’ll want to hear Katy’s experience.
“Every day is different and there’s always a new challenge each day”
Katy starts her day at 6 am with the daily store delivery but beyond this, each day can shape up differently from the last. She’ll help her team print tickets off for the day, lend a hand serving at the counter, take sales calls and check over the branch’s contracts. And when she’s not overseeing the jobs on the shop floor, Katy actions her emails and completes the invoicing, so there is never a chance to get bored as a branch manager. Katy says that her can-do attitude and hands-on approach are her best characteristics; they give her the momentum she needs to get her jobs done and motivate the team.
“I love being a branch manager and I would be quite happy doing this job for the rest of my life”
Quite simply, Katy loves what she does. Last month she celebrated 13 years working with us at P&H, starting her journey at PTS in Boston and then following the career development opportunities that we offered her in branches around the UK. She’s now settled at City Plumbing in our Cambridge branch - which like PTS is a company in the P&H group – and she’s doing a fantastic job of overseeing the team there. Working in a team of seven they’ve become a tight-knit family and the strong relationships they’ve built allow them to do a great job and deliver an excellent level of service. Katy loves her leadership role, and nothing excites her more than when she is setting her mind to solving a problem.
“As a team we pride ourselves in our service”
When asked about the biggest challenges she’s faced Katy recalls how it’s been tricky to open her branch and build their reputation. But this isn’t the first branch that she’s opened, it’s the fourth and with each she’s learnt something new. At her current branch, the team are focused on working closely to build relationships with their customers. Katy’s confidence in her team has never wavered because she knows that relationship building is something that her team are great at.
“My advice for someone thinking about joining P&H as a branch manager is do it”
Advice doesn’t get more straightforward than that. Katy encourages others to join the team at P&H because it’s been the most rewarding job she’s had. She tells us that as a branch manager you are given the autonomy to run the branch as you see fit and she credits the leadership team for placing this trust in their colleagues.
“When I’m not at work I spend time with my family”
Outside of work you can find Katy spending time with her family and loved ones. She finds it important to take the time at the weekend to recharge and get ready for another exciting week back at the branch. And we couldn’t agree more that it’s essential to find the right balance between work and rest!
