A day in the life of a Branch Manager

Author: 4MAT Administrator
Jayson joined Plumbing and Heating (P&H) in 2013 with no qualifications or experience in the industry. Fast forward seven years and he’s now managing one of our biggest branches. P&H encompasses eight businesses and employs more than 4,000 people, making us the largest plumbing and heating organisation in the UK. We are personality-driven and hire people who have the right attitude with a work ethic that aligns with our values. Because our people are what enable us to do such great work and deliver excellent service, we want you to hear directly from Jayson what it means to work for P&H as a Branch Manager.

“When I applied for a job at PTS my manager noticed that I didn’t have much experience. But he knew I would be a good fit and everything else could be learnt.”

Having no qualifications or industry experience didn’t stop Jayson from applying for a job in-branch at PTS, a company under the P&H umbrella. Nor did it stop us hiring him. We knew he would be a great fit for the company and spotted his great attitude. He worked at this branch for four years, during which he progressed to assistant branch manager, and reminisces how every day was a joy to be at work thanks to his brilliant team. But Jayson’s ambition meant that he was always pushing for more.

“Sales were great, customer engagement had improved, and this boosted staff engagement.”

In 2017 Jayson relocated to Morecombe to become a branch manager at City Plumbing – another company in the P&H group. Here he went in with a plan that improved sales at the branch and relationships with customers, which saw a huge boost to our employee engagement. The results were so impressive that the plan was rolled out in other P&H branches so they could benefit from the commitment and innovation that Jayson brought to work every day.

By the following year, Jayson was managing the PTS Leeds branch – quite a step up considering the scale of the branch and Jayson’s relatively young age. However, Jayson absolutely rose to the challenge. After all, he didn’t win 2018 Regional Branch of the Year for nothing.

“As a branch manager at P&H you have a big hat rack.”

Jayson explains his extensive duties managing our PTS branch in Leeds, ranging from overseeing the delivery of orders, monitoring the logistics, keeping a watchful eye on H&S practices and developing new business. He jokes that while branch managers do need to be a jack of all trades, they must also be a master of all. But this is one of the best parts of the job for Jayson who says that the variety of the tasks each day keeps him engaged and refreshed.

“Winning the Builders Merchants Federation’s (BMF) Young Merchant Achiever of 2019 is the proudest moment in my work history.”

And Jayson should be extremely proud to be named BMF’s young achiever of the year because this is a huge accolade to receive within the merchant and building trade. Jayson was nominated for the award by our leadership team who recognise how important it is to celebrate the great attitude and new ideas that our colleagues bring to work every day.

“At Plumbing and Heating, there has been a focus on the development of young talent, which is something I’m very passionate about.”

Jayson was involved in assessing MBA students at Manchester Business School to join Plumbing and Heating for short and long-term placements - an initiative that comes straight from the leadership team who are committed to future-proofing P&H. Jayson says that through these efforts he’s seen people join P&H from different cultures, professions and backgrounds that ultimately want to come and be a part of the business. This focus on diversity has helped him discover new outlooks, which is the exact environment that we aim to foster at P&H.

“I travel around the country watching my brother play rugby”

When Jayson isn’t managing the branch, he’s touring around England to watch his younger brother play rugby at professional level and says that watching him become a successful sportsman has given him the drive to be as successful within the P&H group, if not more. And living in the Lake District Jayson enjoys taking his cocker spaniel out for longs walks with his partner. A pretty balanced lifestyle if you ask us!

Are you interested in bringing your career to Plumbing and Heating?

Jayson is proof that the right attitude and work ethic can be more important than industry experience and knowledge. If you think that you’d be a great fit in the P&H team then we want to hear from you. We are always looking for great people to join us as branch managers, electrical managers, drivers or to come and work in our warehouses. Find our latest Branch Manager jobs here.
